A project on pseudoscience in work/employment led by Inkeri Koskinen has been funded by the Aaltonen Foundation. The three-year project begins in January in Helsinki and in Tampere. The team includes Ilmari Hirvonen working in the project as a post-doc, and Kaisa Luoma as a doctoral researcher. Päivi Seppälä and Marko Forsell are also members of the research team.

TINT received funding from the Finnish Cultural Foundation for its Argumenta project that deals with the serviceability of economics to society in response to current and future crises and challenges. The project brings together an interdisciplinary group of experts, and will organise a range of public events. The project is led by N.E. Aydinonat.

TINT hosts three visiting researchers this autumn: Jane Gatley (Society of Applied Philosophy) visits for September. She specializes in philosophy of education.
Malvina Ongaro (Università del Piemonte Orientale) visits from October to November. Her interests are in decision theory and the topic of uncertainty.
Aaro Hazak (TalTech) will be visiting from October to January. He is Professor of Institutional Economics at his home university.

New Academy Project in philosophy of economics by TINT members
A four year research project titled has been awarded funding by Academy of Finland. The project is titled Economics as serviceable social knowledge (ESSK): Philosophical investigations on the policy relevance of economics in post-pandemic society. 2020 ISOS essay competition winning article by Tuomas Vesterinen published
An article by Tuomas Vesterinen titled Identifying the Explanatory Domain of the Looping Effect: Congruent and Incongruent Feedback Mechanisms of Interactive Kinds is now published here. The article was selected as the winner of the 2020 essay competition of the International Social Ontology Society (ISOS). As the winner, Tuomas was invited as a keynote speaker to the Social Ontology 2020 conference.

A H2020 Twinning project that involves TINT researchers was accepted by the European Commission
A H2020 Twinning project that involves TINT researchers (N. Emrah Aydinonat as project coordinator at UH and Michiru Nagatsu as a work package PI) was accepted by the European Commission. The title of the project is Individual Behaviour and Economic Performance: Methodological Challenges and Institutional Context. The project is led by Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech, Estonia) in collaboration with University of Helsinki (Finland), Aalto University (Finland), and Tel Aviv University (Israel). Three new research assistants, Kaisla Kareoja, Jannika Lalu and Tatu Nuotio have joined the team at TINT. Kaisla is a master’s student in philosophy with interests in environmental and sustainability sciences. Jannika is a master’s student in practical philosophy and is interested especially in explanation in the social sciences and social ontology. Tatu is a master’s students in practical philosophy with interests in social ontology, explanation in the social sciences and the concept of rationality.

Director Mäki conferred with decoration of Knight
On the country’s Independence Day, 6 December, 2018, President of the Republic of Finland conferred upon Uskali Mäki decorations of the order Knight, First Class, of the Order of the White Rose of Finland (Suomen Valkoisen Ruusun I luokan ritarimerkki). This honour is awarded to citizens who have distinguished themselves in the service of Finland. The award is based on the person’s significant merits that they have exhibited by their professional expertise or in their activity in notable societal functions. The person must also be of good repute.

TINT started out as a research centre in the philosophy of the social sciences in 2006. In 2012-2017, we enjoyed generous Centre of Excellence funding from the Academy of Finland and the University of Helsinki, which enabled TINT to expand and advance further. For this support we express our gratitude to the Academy and the University.
TINT will continue as a thriving research centre for the philosophy of the social sciences with an updated research agenda: Changing Science in Changing Society (CSCS). CSCS is a natural sequel to the research TINT has conducted as a CoE, allowing TINT to put its earlier results into new uses. Please see our updated Research page for more information.
